Problem 5.15 - Axial Deformation

Problem Statement

A crate weight W = 120 lb is attached to a cable constructed from steel of length L1 = 12 in. and Area A1 = 0.02 in.2 and aluminum of length L2 = 24 in. and area A2 = 0.03 in.2. What is the total deflection of the crate after it is attached to the wire? Assume Esteel = 29,000 ksi and Ealuminum = 10,000 ksi. Neglect the weight of the wires.
